Cleveland, OH (Jan. 11, 2012)—Disney On Ice and several “Fairy Godmothers and Godfathers” will help fulfill the dreams of eight girls from the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, Northeast Ohio Region on Thursday, Jan. 12 at 10:00 a.m. during a royal celebration fit for a queen! In conjunction with Disney On Ice presents Dare to Dream performing in Cleveland at Quicken Loans Arena Jan. 6-12, the girls and their families will be invited to the arena for a morning filled with princess makeovers and complete with a surprise appearance by Cinderella.
The event is a joint collaboration between Disney On Ice, the Make-A-Wish Foundation®, Virginia-Marti College of Art and Design (VMCAD), Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores®, Crocs™ and John Robert’s Spa. As part of their princess makeover, the girls will receive custom-made dresses designed by fashion design students and graduates of VMCAD and inspired by the girls’ favorite Disney Princesses. Crocs will donate shoes to match each dress. “Our designers have been working for months on their designs and perfecting these dresses for the girls, making each dress unique to fit their individual styles. All of the girls inspire us each and every day, so designing these dresses is the least that we could do to make their day special,” said Lisa Marti, Director of Career Services at VMCAD.
All of the fabric used for the dresses was donated by Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores. “We are thrilled to be a part of these girls’ magical day,” said Beth Shivak, Manager of Public Relations and Special Events at Jo-Ann. “We had fun pulling fabrics of different jewel tones and textures that we knew would be very fitting for a princess.”
Upon receiving their princess dresses, the girls will be invited to visit different princess transformation stations where the girls can embellish their new Crocs with Jibbitz™, get their hair and nails done by John Robert’s Spa and decorate their own tiaras. Radio Disney will officially declare the girls “Princesses for the Day” and emcee a runway show where the girls can walk the red carpet and show off their princess makeovers.
The Make-A-Wish® mission is to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. "So many little girls dream of being a princess: the dress, the hair, the castle,” said Susan McConnell, President & CEO of the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Ohio, Kentucky & Indiana. “These eight truly remarkable girls dream of an escape from daily doctor appointments and hope for a ‘happily ever after.’ Disney On Ice and all of our volunteers help to create a little escape for them.”
Following the princess party, the girls will also be guests to that evening’s performance of Disney On Ice presents Dare to Dream.
Dare to Dream, a vibrant, contemporary compilation of princesses, features popular songs and unforgettable scenes from two of Disney’s newest fairytales and one of the most cherished stories of all time. Audiences will behold an alluring aerialist act with Rapunzel’s golden locks, shimmering gowns that twinkle and twirl during Cinderella’s royal ball, a lighting display that illuminates all the fireflies in Tiana’s New Orleans bayou and a grand finale with all the Disney princesses.
Tickets for Disney On Ice presents Dare to Dream are affordably priced at $15, $21 and $48, with a limited number of Discount Drug Mart Front Row ($70) seats available. Virginia Marti design students show us how they would dress Kate Middleton for the royal wedding
Posted on Wednesday, April 27th, 2011(Excerpt from The Plain Dealer By Emily Hamlin, 4/26/2011)
The details of Kate Middleton’s wedding dress are a tightly kept secret, but that hasn’t stopped anyone — including us — from speculating.
In honor of the royal wedding Friday (the ceremony starts at 6 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time), we asked four fashion students to show us what they would design for the princess-to-be.

Kristen Woodruff – Virginia Marti College of Art and Design
Hometown: Toledo.
The dress: I chose this design over a few others I drew because I feel it fits her personality, body type and royal appeal. Sleeves were a must, but I did not want overly used, and simply hideous, leg-of-mutton sleeves, so I opted for the more modern see-through lace. A train is important for a royal wedding, and I chose a round, lacey approach. The mermaid-style silhouette will show off her curves without being revealing.
Career plans: Right now I’m just deciding exactly where I fit in the fashion world. But I lean more toward menswear and costuming.

Joy Kobzowicz – Virginia Marti College of Art and Design
Hometown: Medina.
Details: The entire dress is made of silk organza. It is a halter style and has pale, cold-stone gray coloring. The ruched bodice features crystals and gems sewn into the material. Completing the look is an organza-tulle veil with hand-sewn crystals and a beaded headdress. I did a lot of designs for her, and I chose this one because it is dramatic, yet not over the top. The silk organza was the inspiration. It was light and feminine, and it reminded me of a spring fabric.
Career plans: I’m headed to the West Coast after graduation to continue my education. I would love to work in the entertainment industry, maybe costumes.
