COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
TEXTILES FD102
Textiles is an in-depth examination of natural and man-made fibers, yarn characteristics
and fabric construction, from the fiber stage to the finished fabric. Merchandisers
and Fashion Designers will be able to apply the textile facts to the appropriate
selection, use, and care of today's fabric and textile product.
FASHION DESIGN 1 - SKIRT DESIGN AND PATTERN MAKING
FD121
Prerequisite: Required that B125 be taken concurrently
with FD121
Students start their studies of the French method of pattern
making, the foundation of basic design principles, by drafting
increasingly complicated skirts. Developing various styles
of these garments and interpreting existing designs, prepares
the student to create and execute skirt samples of their
own concept.
FASHION DESIGN II - BLOUSE DESIGN AND PATTERNA
MAKING FD122
Prerequisite: Required that B126 be taken concurrently
with FD122
Students continue their studies of the French method of
pattern making by adding bodice, sleeve, and collar theories
to their fundamental knowledge of design. Building upon
previously learned drafting skills, the student will develop
both original and existing blouse designs on mannequin
and live models
FASHION DESIGN III - DRESS DESIGN AND PATTERN
MAKING FD123
Prerequisite: Required that FD211 be taken concurrently
with FD123
Having applied theories of skirt and blouse making from
previous quarters, students combine these skills, resulting
in the development of one piece dresses. New theory involving
silhouette and shape adds tools for the designing student
to incorporate into existing and original dress designs.
HISTORY OF COSTUME FD127
A study of the mode in costume from primitive man to 1900.
Emphasis will be placed on the prevailing design of costumes
worn and information regarding origin, dates, colors,
hairstyles, shoe styles, and accessories.
HISTORY OF COSTUME II FD128
Continuation of History of Costume I, 1901 to the present.
The great designers of the century will be studied. The
importance of their signature look, along with their contributions
to the fashion world, will be analyzed. Product and merchandising
knowledge of accessories, cosmetics and perfume will be
included.
INTRODUCTION TO FASHION FD141
Introduction to Fashion is an overview of the fashion industry
from the designer's fashion concept through the promotion
of fashion to the ultimate consumer. The factors that
are involved in the decision making processes of the
consumer will be analyzed.
FASHION ILLUSTRATION I FD211
Prerequisite: B125, B126
The enhancement of figure drawing by subtly altering proportions
of the human form and simplifying realistic details. Emphasis
on the five fashion figures and their coordination with
garment design. A study of techniques whereby the fashion
figure and general silhouettes are memorized to enhance
the creative process of design. A study of controlled and
descriptive drawing techniques to suggest texture, pattern
and the behavior of fabric. The analysis of specific forms
of folds, gathers, drapes and garment detailing with the
form and pose of the picture.
FASHION ILLUSTRATION II FD212
Prerequisite: FD211
Advanced study of fashion figures in the industry-required
format. Coordinated study of fashion figure, original designs,
signature style, fabric analysis and medium usage. Emphasis
on professional appearance and industry requirements. An
exploration of fabric as a surface interest that encompasses
both pattern and texture as it coordinates with the natural
form and pose of the human figure and garment. Emphasis
on the use of different mediums to illustrate pattern and
texture.
FASHION PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT FD251
Prerequisite: Required that FD295 be taken concurrently
with FD251
To acquire knowledge of the theory of product development
and forecasting, and applying this to the process of developing
a product from concept to commercialization
DRAPING I FD301
Prerequisite: Completion of all courses in fashion design/pattern
making sequence
Students review the French (hate couture) method of pattern
making before draping various garments in mini and full
scale. After draping a garment, the muslin is traced onto
paper and 'trued' to perfect the pattern. Then the student
will remake it to prove the fit. A mini, traditional wedding
gown with sleeves and a train will be the required final
original design.
DRAPING II FD302
Prerequisite: FD301
Time-honored techniques from the ateliers of Paris are
taught in this course. A complicated dress design is selected
for the student to interpret and copy. This involves the
student with direct application of fabric to mannequin,
resulting in a finished draped garment using traditional
couture skills
PORTFOLIO PREPARATION FD295
Prerequisite: Seventh quarter standing
The production and development of a portfolio for job interviews.
An expansive and inclusive development of illustrations
that form a representative collection and scope of a student's
technical and artistic skills.
COLLECTION FD320
Prerequisite: All Fashion Design & Patternmaking Courses
and FD295
Students construct a five piece grouping of garment designs
(a collection). The design process will include developing
a customer profile, fabrication board and cost sheets.
Students will flat pattern or drape their designs to fit
their models. The collection will be selected from one
of the groupings they illustrated in FD 295 Portfolio Preparation.
SPORTSWEAR DESIGN AND PATTERN MAKING FD374
Prerequisite: Required that FD212 be taken concurrently
with FD374
A study in design where sewing, fitting, and pattern making
skills are taught to create a multitude of sportswear garments,
including slacks, culottes, active wear, and swimwear.
Exercises involve interpreting design from existing sketch
or photo to finished garment. Students will complete this
course by presenting two originally designed sportswear
pieces.
COMPUTER AIDED FASHION DESIGN I FD393
Prerequisite: X040 and second year standing
Introduction to computer aided fashion design using Gerber
software. Students will learn to establish rule tables
for grading sizes, digitize patterns, develop alteration
tables and make markers.
TAILORED GARMENTS DESIGN AND PATTERN MAKING FD376
Prerequisite: Required that FD295 be taken concurrently
with FD376
Using their knowledge of the French Method of pattern making,
students expand their drafting skills to tailoring principles
producing suits, coats, and capes. Beginning with precise
drafting and fitting, students hone their skills to create
an original tailored garment using traditional methods
of inner construction, pressing, and hand stitching.
COMPUTER AIDED FASHION DESIGN II FD394
Prerequisite: Successful completion of FD393
Utilizing the practical application of CAD I, students
are shown digital pattern making skills using functions
such as points, piece and line. A three piece collection
will be designed and illustrated, then drafted on the computer.
