COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
TEXTILES FM102
Textiles is an in-depth examination of natural and man-made
fibers, yarn characteristics and fabric construction,
from the fiber stage to the finished fabric. Merchandisers
and Fashion Designers will be able to apply the textile
facts to the appropriate selection, use and care of todayÕs
fabric and textile product.
HISTORY OF COSTUME I FM127
A study of the mode in costume from primitive man to 1900.
Emphasis will be placed on the prevailing design of costumes
worn and information regarding origin, dates, colors,
hairstyles, shoe styles, and accessories.
HISTORY OF COSTUME I FM128
The basics of perspective representation and construction
are explored through students' exercises. One-point and
two-point methods of mechanical layout are learned. Use
of media is introduced. Basically a hands-on 'how to'
course.
INTRODUCTION TO FASHION FM141
Introduction to Fashion is an overview of the fashion industry
from the designer's fashion concept through the promotion
of fashion to the ultimate consumer. The factors that
are involved in the decision making processes of the
consumer will be analyzed.
ACCOUNTING FOR NON-ACCOUNTANTS FM151
Prerequisite: G141, G142
Fundamental accounting procedures and concepts. Nature
of accounts and techniques of recording, summarizing and
classifying accounting data along with double entry procedures,
end of period summary activities, preparation of worksheets
and financial statements.
MERCHANDISING MATH FM155
Prerequisite: G141, G142
This course is designed to provide a fundamental understanding
of the merchandising elements that affect a reasonable
profit performance, including the terminology and special
mathematical applications specific to the retail industry.
FASHION PRODUCT ANALYSIS FM165
Analysis of apparel and soft goods with emphasis on construction,
value and selling points. Product knowledge will be enhanced
by the acquisition of basic garment construction skills
including machine sewing, hand-stitching and the application
of basic sewing skills. Study of soft goods will include
linens, curtains, bedding, etc. The study of hard goods
will include furniture, lighting, house wares, and general
home accessories.
PRINCIPLES OF RETAILING FM171
The basics of retailing, including global electronic commerce
(E-Commerce), applied to the fashion field. Buying, merchandising,
operational, promotional, and financial functions will
be covered.
ADVERTISING AND PROMOTION FM181
Explores aspects of fashion advertising and promotion.
Shows how to analyze, evaluate, create and how to use
promotion and advertising. Describes types of advertising,
how to motivate customers, media selection, advertisement
planning and production. Also covers publicity, window
and interior display and special events.
FASHION WRITING FM200
Prerequisite: G101, G102
Students will focus on increasing fashion vocabulary, creative
writing skills, basic journalism skills (interviewing and
editing) and fashion writing history. Students will develop
a critical eye for reading fashion news articles, local
newspapers, and magazines.
CAD FOR FASHION MERCHANDISING FM202
Prerequisite: X040 and second year standing
Students will use Fashion Studio Suite created by NEDGRAPHICSª,
a CAD-based software used worldwide in the fashion industry.
FASHION BUYING AND MERCHANDISING FM205
The study of techniques and tools of merchandising covering
the what, where, and how of a buyer's life. Emphasis
will be placed on merchandising planning from a six-month
merchandise plan to preparation of a balanced stock to
planning buying trips, writing orders, pricing merchandise,
and evaluation accuracy
of book inventory.
MANAGEMENT AND SUPERVISION FM220
Application of psychological principles of human behavior
as they relate to the world of work, including techniques
and principles of present-day industry. Covers recruitment
selection, training, evaluation, leadership, motivation,
and consumer behavior.
DATA PROCESSING FM232
Prerequisite: X040
This course will introduce data processing applicable to
the Fashion Merchandiser. Students will use current software
to perform research and data analysis using database programs.
IMPORT/EXPORT FM234
Introduction to the principles of international marketing
with emphasis on global economic, cultural, and political/legal
differences between countries. The future in a changing
world economy and careers in international business.
FASHION PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT FM251
Prerequisite: Seventh quarter standing
To acquire knowledge of the theory of product development
and forecasting, and applying this to the process of developing
a product from concept to commercialization.
RETAIL INTERIOR DESIGN FM260
The concepts and techniques of creating effective spaces
for selling various types of merchandise are examined.
VISUAL MERCHANDISING I FM270
Prerequisite: Second year standing
Explores visual merchandising including, but not limited
to, store windows, point-of-sale areas, in-store displays
and wall areas, and the various display materials used
in retailing.
VISUAL MERCHANDISING II FM271
Prerequisite: FM270
This course continues with the understanding and application
of concepts and techniques related to visual display. It
employs workshops, field trips and display set-ups that
focus on the critical elements that make up successful
merchandising displays.
INTERNSHIP FM290
Prerequisite: Completion of all coursework prior to the
eighth quarter. To be taken concurrently with B254
Internship is a cooperative venture between the Fashion
Merchandising profession and the college to provide the
student with on-the-job training. Skills learned in the
classroom will be utilized in the placement as much as
possible. Students must maintain a minimum work schedule
of 6 hours per week and attend regular Internship Review
sessions.
FASHION CONSULTING - ADVANCED FM295
Prerequisite: Second year standing
Image consulting, fashion and wardrobe planning for clients,
fund raising and wedding consultant techniques, bookkeeping,
and client record keeping.
