An overview of basic design and layout fundamentals such as line, shape, texture,
color, and use of type. Students learn techniques involved in creating layouts
from basic symbol development through creative problem solving for complex designs.
TYPOGRAPHY CA132
Prerequisite: CA123
A basic introduction to designing with type and the development
of type throughout history. Students will learn how to
distinguish typestyles based on the characteristics, render
different typestyles by hand, and use type as an illustration
and design tool. Students will apply this knowledge and
skill in a variety of original and creative type projects.
ILLUSTRATION I/OVERVIEW CA141
Prerequisite: CA123, CA132
Students will learn about the history of illustration,
focusing on famous illustrators of our time. They will
also learn a variety of illustration techniques and mediums
used in the professional illustration field. Students will
apply these techniques and mediums in a variety of original
illustration projects.
ILLUSTRATION II/ADVANCED PROJECTS CA142
Prerequisite: CA141
Students will have the opportunity to work with clients
from the industry in creation of 5 original illustrations
based on each client's project requirements and specifications.
The production of the illustrations and the client meetings
will be supervised by the instructor.
ILLUSTRATION III/DIGITAL ILLUSTRATION CA143
Prerequisite: CA142, CA203, CA204
The demonstration of a variety of digital illustration
techniques using Adobeª Photoshop and Illustrator.
Students will apply these techniques in a variety of original
digital illustration projects.
INDESIGN/PAGE LAYOUT CA200
Prerequisite: CA201, CA202
An introduction to basic computerized page layout including
layout design, image setting, page composition, and text
flow using Adobeª InDesign to create a series of creative
single-page advertising and editorial projects.

Introduction to the basic concepts and methods of advanced
photograph retouching and photo-illustration using Adobeª Photoshop
software.

Introduction to the basic concepts and methods of advanced
drawing and illustration using Adobeª Illustrator
software.
ADVANCED PHOTOSHOP PROJECTS CA203

Students will learn advanced image editing, color correction
and adjustment, layer effects, and drawing tools using
Adobeª Photoshop. Students will apply these advanced
tools in a variety of original industry-standard projects.

Students will learn advanced vector image creation, manipulation,
special effects, and drawing tools using Adobeª Illustrator.

Design and execution of corporate identity projects including
logos, stationery, and annual reports using page layout

This course is designed to meet the practical requirement
of the professional for business writing and speaking.
Students use acquired marketing and communication skills
in conjunction with artistic skills to develop a visual

WEB DESIGN CA265

Introduction to web design and HTML development using Macromediaª Dreamweaver.
Web theory and history will also be addressed.
ADVANCED WEB DESIGN CA266

Advanced projects in web design using Macromediaª Flash
to develop dynamic, interactive, and animated web content.
Students will conceptualize, design, develop, upload, and
maintain their own interactive multimedia web sites.
3D DESIGN I CA288
Prerequisite: CA201, CA202
The three dimensional principles of design for packaging
and exhibits as they pertain to advertising. Construction
techniques based on Platonic Geometry, leading to development
of 3-D fabrication through hands-on and computer applications.
3D DESIGN II CA289
Prerequisite: CA201, CA202
Continuation of CA288 using three dimensional principles
to design visual displays, die-cut, pop-up visuals, and
innovative package design.
PORTFOLIO PRESENTATION CA294
Prerequisite: 7th or 8th quarter standing
An exploration, analysis, and preparation of a professional
portfolio to meet the employment and promotional needs
of the graphic designer. Students learn methods, techniques
and tools for effective portfolio preparation strategy
and structure, element selection and preparation, self
promotion, and interviewing techniques.
PRINT PRODUCTION CA295
Prerequisite: CA200, CA201, CA202
A study of basic techniques, procedures, and processes
of graphic art preparation and reproduction. Students learn
how to prepare mechanicals for one, two, and four color
process material.
ADVANCED INDESIGN/MULTIPAGE LAYOUT CA212
Prerequisite: CA203, CA204, CA200, CA295
Students will learn advanced layout design and page layout
procedures with a focus on multi-page layout using Adobeª InDesign.
They will have an industry-standard knowledge of the prepress
and print production process. Students will apply their
layout design, page layout, and prepress knowledge in a
variety of original industry-standard projects.
INTERNSHIP CA301
Prerequisite: Completion of all coursework prior to the
eighth quarter. To be taken concurrently with B254
Internship is a cooperative venture between the Graphic
Design profession and the college to provide the student
with on-the-job training. Skills learned in the classroom
will be utilized in the placement as much as possible.
Students must maintain a minimum work schedule of 6 hours
per week and attend regular Internship Review sessions.

tool for creating rich, dynamic content and applications
for the web and interactive media.

The Look: Personal and professional image development.
Ideas and discoveries in personal and professional image,

COMIC AND FANTASY ILLUSTRATION CA104
Prerequisite: CA141, CA142 or Portfolio Review
Learn character development, concepting techniques, rendering
techniques, and the art of comic and fantasy illustration
from a famed fantasy and comic book artist.
