Portfolio Review for GD students, March 12th
Graduating GD students present to industry professionals.
From 12:00 – 2:00 PM, graduating GD students will present to a panel of guest reviewers, which include: Dan Weiss, Senior Creative Recruitment (American Greetings), Greg Luvison, Creative Director for over 19 years (Stern Advertising), and Michelle Seeber, Account Executive (Felber & Felber Marketing). Students present in the last week of their Portfolio Presentation class in order to obtain vital feedback and develop their interviewing and professional presentation skills. The open and relaxed environment allows students to "Fail Forward," or learn from their mistakes. The panel is designed to help students become confident and well prepared.

"How Multi-Cultural Marketing Can Impact Your Business’ Bottom Line" theme for Diversity Day Event

VMCAD and the American Advertising Federation (AAF) is co-sponsoring "How Multi-Cultural Marketing Can Impact Your Business’ Bottom Line" with AT&T, and Glazen Creative. Guest lecturer will be Jennifer Jones, VP for Diverse Markets and Post Sale Communications at AT&T. Ms. Jones will discuss the importance of targeted multi-cultural marketing and the long-term successes it can achieve. Registration, Networking, Continental Breakfast – 8:30 AM, Program 9:00-11 AM. Tickets – $15 for members, $25 for non-members, $10 for students.
VMCAD Animation Camp
Sign up now! The animation camp consists of 4 sessions, each only $25.
The instructor, Dave Fleischer, has created puppeteering software for Nickelodeon, been lead animator on theme park rides for Disney, and has taught animation at The Cleveland Institute of Art.

"Fashionable Art" show March 5, 7 PM
Mr. Salerno’s Fashion Show Production class will be putting on its show, titled "Fashionable Art."
On Friday, March 5 at 7:00 p.m. in the college auditorium, the Fashion Show Production class presents its show. "Fashionable Art" will feature models dressed in black, wearing a wide variety of accessories, which emulate the digital images on screen.
The background images will include color, pop art, Chanel, and untamed influences. Various local merchants will be donating clothing and salons for make-up and hair, including Dante Lucci & Tomorrows salons.
DM Student Phil Hoyt at Fathom Interactive
Fourth quarter DM Student, Phil Hoyt, is now working at Fathom Interactive as a web designer.
Interior Design Presentations, March 11, 6 PM
Guest judges will critique three ID presentations in the Interior Design lab.
Sherri Habansky, Cassie Rice and April Funke are presenting their last ID projects. These presentations are open to all ID students.
Students Edit NIKE Spots
Mr. Kerecman’s Editing II students finished editing pitch spots for NIKE in collaboration with Red40 Productions.
Red40 directed the spots while DM students and grads did the production work of running cameras, location scouting, and casting, etc.
East Side Showrooms ID Field Trip, March 23rd
Students who went on the showroom visit last break agreed that this field trip is time well spent!
ID Student and Student Representative of the Board ASID, Barbara Stowe, is organizing this event. Agenda coming soon.
Pre-Production Workshop at VMCAD
On March 18 and 19, students and grads will work with film professionals in a Pre-Production workshop.
Instructed by Deb Girard (Sister Act, Mrs. Doubtfire) and Debbie Stratis (Titanic), students get experience on how to take a script and break it down so that tasks are delegated to the various departments. A studio tour at Gemini Productions will also be a part of this workshop. Students will break down an actual feature film script (American Splendor, 2003) and assign duties to the various film departments, including location, art camera and costume.
CANSTRUCTION: Design for Food Bank
Design a can sculpture to benefit Food Bank of Cleveland.
Build out is scheduled for March 26 at Beachwood Mall with the Awards Gala the following day. Last year’s event was wonderful. VMCAD’s project won the “Most Structural Ingenuity” Award! There is still time to get involved and help Christopher, Cassie and Kinsley putting together this project. Please see the drawings posted at the board by the elevator.

DM student Ryan Atkins gets job at City Mission
Ryan will help the City Mission for their upcoming anniversary.
He will help produce, manage and distribute videos for City Mission’s upcoming 100th anniversary gala, "Celebration of Hope".
ASID / IIDA Student Career Day, April 9th, 8:30 – noon.
Student Career Day is at the Ohio Design Centre.
Co-sponsored with International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Cleveland/Akron City Center, students will be provided with an opportunity to visit with their peers from other schools and share in a panel discussion with professionals. Push Against Poverty Website Project
Final project for Web Design class joins the fight against poverty.
Mr. Pelaia’s web site design class took on a client this quarter for their final web design project. Push Against Poverty is a grassroots youth coalition to bring young
people together to collaborate with community leaders, nonprofits, and public officials to fight poverty.
David Herzbergh speaks April 22nd
From Bennet Supply, David Herzbergh will speak about different finish materials such as flooring, and laminates from 12:00 -1:00.
Open Doors Documentary, March 20th
Graduate Angela Bowen produced a video documentary for Open Doors Academy.
The academy’s annual fundraising event on March 20th will premiere Angela’s documentary on the Open Doors Academy. DM students Ryan Atkins and David Wester assisted with videography. Chris Davey, Rebecca Richmond, and Ray Diluzio edited the piece. (http://www.opendoorsacademy.org)
ID students still working with the City Mission
Students are coordinating the design and implementation of the wall mural for the Victory Room.
Mary McKenney, ID student, is working with the development of the design of the mural with City Mission.
Cleveland Indians Spots
Digital Media's Editing I class took on a project presented by the Cleveland Indians.
This quarter, the students were tasked with editing 10 thirty-second spots, which will be featured during home games at Progressive Field, highlighting Tribe fans' favorite ball park memories. Students got to edit footage from the actual games that fans described and enjoyed looking at archival Indians’ footage.
Elyza Bryant Beauty Salon completed
This project was designed by ID students, Jill Pietrocini, Cassie Rice and Brandie Sarka.
We will visit it for the first time since completion on March 1st. The students measured the space and made recommendations for layout, colors and finishes for walls, floors, window treatment and cabinetry.
Sourcery 26, The Business of Design, April 29th
This ID tradeshow is for student benefit, along with our fellow colleagues.
Mark your calendar and plan on joining us for the morning's CEU, lunch, and exhibits, featuring the latest products and services. A cocktail party will close out the day. Ann Lahiff is a VMCAD Instructor and part of the ASID Board, is on the organizing committee for ASID Sourcery.
ID Field Trip to Falling Water Trip, June 15
The ID Field trip to Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Falling Water” is being planned by the ASID chapter/students. Details coming soon.
Student Art Show
Attention students! This year’s student art show is fast approaching!
The show will take place on Friday, May 14th, 2010 from 6:30-8:30 at VMCAD. All students are welcome to submit work that showcases their technical and creative skills. Guest judges from the community will be in to review all the student work.
First place finishers will receive $200, Second and Third place finishers will receive $100 and $50 respectively, and the Best in Show winner will receive $500!
Students can submit work in the following categories:
- Fashion Design/Fashion Illustration
- Fashion Merchandising/Visual Display
- Graphic Design
- Interior Design
- Drawing/Graphic Illustration
- Digital Media and Photography
Guidelines for submissions are available at the front desk. Deadline for all student work is May 2, 2010.
